Bay of Islands locals are cheering more competition in the skies, with Barrier Air set to take on Air New Zealand.

The Barrier Air flights will start from August 4, with 22 trips planned each week between Kerikeri and Auckland.

The airline is best known in Northland for flying between Kaitāia and Auckland, after Air NZ stopped its northernmost service in 2015.

Chief executive Grant Bacon said the Kaitāia service is strengthening, including recent success with extra flights on Friday and Sunday nights, to allow a weekend getaway.

“We have a great result with Kaitāia. We figure that with our reputation in the Far North, Kerikeri is the next step.”

The move comes just after Air NZ increased the prices of its domestic routes and domestic airfares were ranked New Zealand’s least competitive market.

Prices for Barrier Air’s flights will be announced shortly, and Bacon said there will be price certainty and flexibility without penalty.

The small airline cancelled just four Kaitāia flights last year, about 0.3 per cent, all due to weather. It has bought a new, $5 million 14-seat Cessna Grand Caravan EX for the Bay of Islands journeys, Bacon said.

WHOOP WHOOP say the locals!

The post Competitive flights to Kerikeri first appeared on Northland Experiences.

We have cycled many trails…this tour has it all! In early October 2023 Tony and I were fortunate to be able to sneak a week’s holiday in Northland taking the 5 night Cook to Kupe cycle adventure with Northland Experiences. Having previously enjoyed both guided and self-guided cycle trails in NZ and overseas, we felt a certain shortcoming in not being able to confidently promote Northland’s very own cycle adventure.

Wairere Boulders

Northland Experience’s Cook to Kupe fully supported 5-day cycle tour was full of surprises, even to the locals, who thought they had seen a fair bit of Northland already. The trip is a mix of easy to moderate cycling, combined with visits to some of Northland’s most iconic and interesting attractions. The visits to well-known sites like Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Manea – Footprints of Kupe Cultural Centre, Footprints of Waipoua Forest and Tane Mahuta and the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway were enhanced by incredibly knowledgeable guides, while other less known attractions such as the Waiwere Boulders, Ranui on Hokianga, Rawene Puzzle Shop and Waiotemarama Falls provided stunning and unexpected local treasures.

Most days included around 20 to 40km of cycling, almost entirely off road. With the naturally quiet roads in Northland, the occasional on-road section didn’t faze even a nervous road cyclist such as me. In true Northland style some of the on-road was along unsealed roads. Given that all the riders in our group had selected e-bikes, the riding was easily achievable. A couple of decent hills were thrown into the mix to brighten up our day, with the van option also available for those in need of a rest. Most of the ride is across the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail which has been well maintained and is in excellent condition despite the recent bad weather.

Ranui – taking you across the Harbour from Horeke to Kohukohu.

Predictably for springtime, the weather was variable, but with a flexible itinerary we were able to work around the intermittent showers and structure each day to avoid riding in the rain.

Accommodation and dining were superbly selected to provide a fabulous selection of authentic Northland experiences. From a beautiful historic hill side villa overlooking the Hokianga Harbour to the Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell, each night was very comfortable, with authentic and welcoming hosts. Meals ranged from the much-appreciated packed lunch to pub meals, and gourmet restaurants. Again, a well-chosen selection with great service and quality designed to give both locals and visitors to our regions an authentic taste of Northland.

The Duke of Marlborough Hotel on the Russell waterfront

Our guide, Shane, clearly well-known and well respected across Northland, provided an incredible backdrop to the journey with anecdotes and information. His knowledge of Northland stretched across history, both Māori and Pakeha, geology and geography, flora, and fauna. Shane’s commentary was a highlight and proved to us that we didn’t know nearly enough about our own region. As an aside, nothing was too much trouble for Shane in attending to the bikes at the end of the day, making sure they were ready for the next day, and transporting them from place to place when required. As any e-bike rider can attest to, they are heavy units to lift on and off a trailer.

In mentioning the trailer – theirs was one of the most innovative adaptions we have seen on our travels. The charging stations were inbuilt to the trailer, so the trailer could be plugged in at night and the bikes left on the trailer and plugged into an outlet in situ. While we were on our own bikes, the ones provided by Northland Experiences were, importantly, well maintained and of good quality.

Overall, a memorable and enjoyable week. The highlights were the riding, the incredible and knowledgeable guides, new and old treasures of Northland and the feeling of being on holiday the entire 5 days.

The post An eye opening Cycle Tour first appeared on Northland Experiences.

A scenically spectacular journey by e-bike taking you from the East Coast to the West Coast.

1. Hokianga Harbour – at the end of the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail

You can’t get much better than this! Looking towards Māngungu Mission, this is at the Northern end of the Harbour. And the end of the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail – one of NZ’s Great Rides.

Established as a Wesleyan mission station, Māngungu was the scene of the largest signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. On 12 Feb 1840 around 3,000 people attended and over 70 local chiefs added their signatures to the founding document. Interestingly this was more than twice the number of rangatira (chiefs) who signed at Waitangi.

2. Happy couples anywhere make a great photo

Taken at Mangungu Mission in Horeke, with the harbour in the background. Hi Pete and Rose! Pete and Rose love their cycle trips. Fairly recent converts to e-bikes, they are now off exploring France on two wheels.

3. Explore off the beaten track on an e-bike!

The loop road, Kohukohu. In the days of Kauri milling, Kohukohu was the largest town on the Hokianga Harbour, now it is a small charming village. Packed with history to see around the streets – heritage villas, the Masonic Lodge, the Anglican Church, a police station and an old school

4. A view from your hotel in Hokianga, Omapere

This is the Southern end of the Hokianga Harbour, as opposed to the Northern end shown in snap #1. Quite a contrast in scenery, but both equally spectacular. This view is from the front lawn of the hotel. You can look out to this incredible vista from most spots on the property – the deck, the pool, the restaurant and many of the rooms as well.

Lord of the Forest. A majestic sight in the day and also on the Twilight Tour. On this tour experience the affinity that Māori have with the forest and the deep spiritual respect they have for these sentinels who have stood silently witnessing the passing of time. Your guide will share thought-provoking information, humorous banter, stories and legends before respectfully greeting the oldest and largest known kauri trees in the world with spine-tingling chants and song.

8. Sunset from the Duke of Marlborough Hotel

The Duke has been refreshing rascals and reprobates since 1987. Located on the waterfront in Kororāreka or Russell, it is the perfect place to watch the sun go down over a cold beverage.

This was an established Māori settlement long before Captain Cook arrived in 1769. In the early 1800s, international ships began visiting Russell to trade with the locals. Sailors, whalers and traders began to congregate there – some of them less than reputable. In no time the town was transformed into a lawless and bawdy port, known as the ‘Hell hole of the Pacific’.

With this kind of atmosphere it’s not surprising that The Duke of Marlborough tavern obtained New Zealand’s first ever liquor licence in the 1840s. You can still see the licence hanging over the bar today!

Starting on the West Coast for a change, making our way across to Cape Brett on the East Coast. We only cover a small area, but here are 10 of the top attractions that all have their own story to tell.

1. Arai Te Uru

This headland offers spectacular views of the Tasman Sea and the giant sand dunes on the opposite side of the Hokianga Harbour entrance, more importantly there is a lot more to this spot than meets the eye.

In 1838 John Martin bought the headland and constructed a signaling mast on the point to guide ships over the treacherous Hokianga sandbar. His white painted house on a nearby hill acted as a navigation marker.

However the real significance of this spot comes from Māori mythology. From Te Arai Te Uru (South Head) you stand looking across to Niua (North head).

Rōpata the Northland Experiences Tour guide does an incredible job of explaining this, and has done so for many cyclists on the tours, journalists visiting and for TV shows. As always it is a captivating and emotional journey with Rōpata as you stand by his side on Arai Te Uru.

Kupe arrived here 1000 years ago, but he felt a great yearning to travel back to Hawaiki to bring his people back here. He put 2 kaitiaki (guardians) in place to protect the harbour and land. These kaitiaki were 2 giant taniwha, and to the North you look across and see Niua who is lying on her side. Furthermore Rōpata will tell you that where you are standing is in fact on the back of the male equivalent – Arai te Uru. However as it turned out it was not Kupe who returned but Nukutawhiti his grandson.

After Rōpata tells these stories in detail, he sings a moving waiata and closes with a karakia. It would be fair to say, many a person standing with him on Arai Te Uru has shed a tear as they feel the deep spiritual connection to the physical world and the culture.

For those of you who were not aware of the role of the taniwha – it was their job to lash out with their powerful tails and stir the waters into such frenzy that invading waka would be swamped and rendered helpless in the sea.

Stories like these told by local guides are undoubtably a highlight on our cycle tours.

In fact we are lucky enough that in recent years the award winning attraction, “Manea Footprints of Kupe” has been developed on the waterfront in Opononi, to tell the story of Kupe and his ancestors.

2. Manea Footprints of Kupe

Manea offers a unique cultural encounter, journeying into Te Ao Māori (the Māori world).

A 75-minute multisensory journey of guided storytelling through art, taonga (cultural treasures), film, performance, digital interaction, and the splendour of Hokianga’s natural surroundings.

The descendants of Kupe welcome you, as do the spirits of their ancestors. Walk with them in the footprints of their ancestor – Kupe the intrepid, Kupe the voyager, Kupe the discoverer.

Finally we enjoy the comments from the clients on our cycle tours as they discuss the experience later – “an amazing, asset to NZ”, “an eye opener”, “right up there with Te Papa”, “absolutely spellbinding”. People just don’t expect this from something located in a village on the west coast in the Far North.

3. Clendon House

Located in Rawene this colonial home built in the 1860s, tells the story of Captain James Reddy Clendon and his wife Jane Takotowi Clendon, both remarkable people for very different reasons. The small village of Rawene itself is a delight to visit with cafes and art galleries.

4. Māngungu Mission

Later that year, the house became the home of Reverend John Hobbs and his family. When they moved 15 years later, so did the house. Consequently it was shifted to Onehunga in Auckland where it was used as a Methodist parsonage until it was sold to private owners. Eventually the mission house was transported back to Māngungu in the 1970s.

Furthermore, Māngungu’s other claim to fame is that it’s the likely spot where the honey bee, Apis mellifera, was first introduced to New Zealand from Europe.

This is a real treat at the end of the Pou Herenga Twin Coast Cycle Trail, with its beautiful surroundings and spectacular views.

5. Te Waimate Mission

New Zealand’s first European farm, Te Waimate Mission was established as a model village in 1830. Te Waimate is a spacious and peaceful site and a place where you can experience a slice of New Zealand’s rural history, and you can even meet some heritage Pitt Island sheep!

Visit the nearby church and cemetery, moving reminders of all those who fell in the tumultuous Northern Wars.

6. Kororipo Heritage Park

Located in Kerikeri this is where Māori and Europeans lived side by side and where some of the most important early meetings between our two cultures took place.

Explore Kororipo Pā, once the seasonal home of famed and feared Chief Hongi Hika. A short track leads to a fortified lookout and stunning view over the Kerikeri Basin.

Take a guided or self-guided tour and stroll along the tree-lined paths at Te Ahurea, and experience pre-European life at this interactive pā site set along the banks of Te Awa o Ngā Rangatira, the River of Chiefs. Here you can also learn more about Māori native plants and traditional medicines in the Discoverers’ Gardens.

Explore Kemp House, New Zealand’s oldest standing building. Constructed in 1822, Kemp House is a large European home built by highly skilled Māori and missionary carpenters. It is surrounded by heritage gardens and orchards including New Zealand’s oldest pear tree

Shop for gifts in the Stone Store, the oldest stone building and trading store in New Zealand and last but not least have a break at the Honey House Cafe.

7. Waitangi Treaty Grounds

An important piece of NZ’s history and the birthplace of our nation. Here marks our start as a bi-cultural nation, and is where Te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed by Māori chiefs and the British Crown on 6 February 1840.

Visit Te Whare Rūnanga (the House of Assembly), which features beautiful and intricate carving, inside and out.

Walk by the waka house and touch the world’s largest war canoe, known as Ngātokimatawhaorua. This impressive waka requires a crew of 76 to sail it.

Explore two new contemporary museums. Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi weaves together the stories and taonga (cultural treasures) which bring to life the history of Waitangi and Aotearoa New Zealand’s founding documents.
Treat yourself to a pastry in the French coffee shop at Pompallier.

Situated right on the waterfront, Pompallier Mission and Printery is a five minute walk from the wharf at Kororāreka (Russell).

The site of New Zealand’s first planned European settlement, a place where Māori and Europeans learned to live side by side.

Enjoy stunning views of the Bay of Islands and the Rangihoua Pā site before heading along the track that leads to the beach. The interactive panel boards help you gain an understanding of the joys and hardships of the people who lived here.

The Marsden Cross memorial marks Aotearoa’s very first Christmas Day service.

Allow at least two hours to explore the highlights of Rangihoua Heritage Park. Swim, walk, picnic and keep an eye out for New Zealand’s oldest lemon trees – they still bear plenty of fruit.

10. Rākaumangamanga – Cape Brett

A place of outstanding beauty, Rākaumangamanga – Cape Brett has long been a welcoming point of arrival, from early waka to the first seaplanes. Rākaumangamanga was the landing point of the first seven waka that travelled from Hawaiki to Aotearoa, whose occupants followed the beaconing lights of the peninsula’s crystalline rocks. The seven distinctive peaks that mark Cape Brett’s spine represent those first seven waka, and remains an area of spiritual and traditional importance to Te Tai Tokerau Māori.

Located high above the famous Hole-in-the-Rock Island, access to Rākaumangamanga is by hike (8 hours). Boat or water taxi from Paihia (35 mins). Or a combination of a boat and walking via Deep Water Cove. There is a DOC hut out there which was where the lighthouse keeper and his family stayed. Travelling out on a Hole in the Rock cruise you will travel through the Bay of Islands with views of this outstanding peninsula to your right.

As you traverse coast to coast you will be surprised at the natural wonders you will find along the way, here are 5 that will create some memories!

1. The Islands

The Bay of Islands renowned for its pristine waters, great fishing and dolphin spotting, is also a haven for birdlife. Groups such as Project Island song have made it their mission to eradicate pests from the islands, in fact they now flourish with native flora, bird life and other native species such as the giant weta! If you are in the Bay of Islands, it really is well worth while to get out to one of the islands for a walk, swim or picnic. Furthermore the Bay of Islands Walking Tour takes in 3 of these beautiful islands – Motuarohia (Roberton), Moturua and Urupukapuka Islands.

Top Tip – If you are not on a tour – don’t miss out – you can catch a ferry to Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island and enjoy walks, swimming and relaxing.

3. Hot Springs

Ngawha mineral pools are a favourite with the locals for their healing and restorative properties. Soak in the pools and let the ancient energy revitalise your senses while the minerals from deep in the earth permeate your body. There are 16 different pools of varying temperatures.

Top Tip – Do not wear your best swimming costume, because the thermal mud leaves a lingering odour.

3. Lake Ōmāpere

Cycling along the stretch of the Twin Coast Cycle trail from Kaikohe to Okaihau you enjoy the view of Lake Ōmāpere, which is a small lake 5km in length and covers 14sq km, with a depth of 3m deep at its deepest point. The Utakura River is the main outflow which goes to the Hokianga Harbour, and you continue your journey cycling along this beautiful river through the Valley and on to the Hokianga Harbour.

Lake Ōmāpere is still home to the indigenous tuna (eel). These tuna set off on an extraordinary migration from the lake, down the Utakura River, coming out into the Hokianga Harbour and they travel through the Habour out into the ocean. Firstly, they swim for up to five or six months to tropical Pacific waters where they spawn and die. Secondly the eggs hatch into leaf-shaped larvae that float back to New Zealand on ocean currents. Thirdly they scale enormous obstacles heading back upstream to make it back home to the lake where they were conceived. Finally the cycle of the Tunas’ life begins once again. Essentially it is truly one of nature’s miracles!

Cycle down to the glorious Hokianga Harbour and take in the view, knowing that those tuna still have months more of swimming to go until they get to the Pacific Islands. This epic journey never ceases to amaze!

Top Tip – Share this story with your fellow cyclists and spare a thought and a prayer for the tuna as you cycle along.

4. Wairere Boulders

Around 2.8 million years ago a volcano at the site of Lake Ōmāpere erupted. This eruption was so huge that a basalt lava flow was spread across a massive area, that extended to Horeke, therefore leaving a wonderland of boulders. Walking trails through the native bush and Wairere Boulder valley allow visitors to get close to nature and see these amazing rock formations. Furthermore, you can also kayak down the gentle Wairere Stream and look at the boulders from a different angle.

Check out the main blog photo – relaxing in the sun at the swimming hole. Photo credit bennettandslater.co.nz

Top Tip – On the loop walk take a short side walk through the Nikau forest which leads you to the swimming hole, don’t forget your togs!

5. Waipoua Kauri Forest

Walk among the giants. The Giant Kauri Trees in the Waipoua Forest are spectacular. Looking up at Tāne Mahuta (the God of the Forest) which is 51.5 metres tall and has a trunk girth of 18.8 metres you feel the physical majesty. On the Northland Experiences Cook to Kupe 5 night e-bike tour we take the Footprints Waipoua Twilight tour – as the Māori guides sing and chant to address the trees you feel that the trees are acknowledging your presence as well. Moreover the feeling of oneness with the ngahere is incredibly strong.

Top Tip – You can just visit the forest by yourself, but going on the Footprints Twilight tour at night adds a whole other dimension to your experience.

Why exploring Northland by bike should be a must do on every adventurer’s bucket list!

Northland is tucked away at the top of New Zealand, but to get there it is just a 45 minute plane ride or a 3 hour drive from Auckland. When you are heading to Northland – you are heading to a destination – you aren’t just passing through from one town to another. Many people just go to visit the Bay of Islands which is re-known worldwide for its natural beauty, 144 islands and excellent fishing. But as most people who visit the Bay find out – there is so much more to Northland, and they come back…again and again and again!

My story is a little different – I didn’t keep coming back, I visited once and never left! I called myself a bit of an adventurer back in those days! I had recently had the most amazing cycle journey myself from Mexico down to Chile over the course of a year, therefore I was not expecting to come home to NZ and fall head over heels in love with the North and all it has to offer.

A stunning place from the tourist mecca of the Bay of Islands on the East Coast across to the wild untamed Hokianga Harbour on the West Coast. At every turn I came across some wonderful sight or activity – and I could not quite grasp where were the hordes of people were?

The Northland Experiences Cook to Kupe Cycle 5 night e-bike tour covers off some of these extraordinary attractions.

Here are just 5 that you won’t find anywhere else in New Zealand or the world for that matter, absolutely unique to Northland!

1. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds – My takeaway from the Treaty Grounds is the pōwhiri and cultural performance. It is infused with humour and yet has moved me to tears each time I watch it. This is the Birthplace of our Nation and a wonderful way to start of any adventure in the North.

Manea Footprints of Kupe – How can such a world class attraction be in such a tiny village? Firstly – Kupe arrived here by waka. Secondly – the view over the harbour and sand dunes. Thirdly – Kupe’s descendants live here and proudly tell the story of Kupe. This is rated in The Times Top 100 things to do in the WORLD and tells you the story of one of our great ancestors – Kupe.

3. Wairere Boulders

Wairere Boulders – This is a Geological Phenomenon of volcanic basalt boulders, fluted by bush tannins which create a world unique Lava Forest. This magical paradise of lush native bush, clear streams and incredible rock formations is hidden far beyond where your everyday tour bus ventures. Walking here is an absolute “feel at one with nature”” experience!

Mangungu Mission House – Located at the end of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail – this mission house has spectacular views of the Hokianga Harbour. I still marvel that it was the largest signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, with 3000 Maori Chiefs there together. Sitting on the deck a blanket of peace and tranquility covers you as your thoughts drift back in time.

5. Ancient Kauri Forests

Ancient Kauri Forests – meet these living legends – Te Matua Ngāhere (the Father of the forest) & Tane Mahuta (the God of the forest). We take you on a magical twilight adventure with Footprints Waipoua. Thought-provoking stories and legends along with humorous banter before respectfully greeting the oldest and largest known kauri trees in the world with spine-tingling chants and song.

Tāne Mahuta by torchlight

On our 5 night e-bike tour we travel along the Pou Herenga Twin Coast Cycle Trail which is one of New Zealand’s Great Rides and takes you from the East in the Bay of Islands across to the West in the Hokianga. From there we veer off the trail to delve even further into the hidden wonders of the North.

To travel to these sights on 2 wheels instead of 4 gives you a great sense of accomplishment, because you take your time to travel through the diverse scenery from one beautiful attraction to another. More importantly we use e-bikes so you still get some exercise in. This ensures you have enough energy at the end of the day to enjoy other activities and not drop off to sleep half through dinner! (Thinking of past cycle tours on my old mountain bike!)

If you are on one of our tours, you will have a local tour guide who will not cycle with you but meet you along the way. They will transfer you and your luggage at times, and ensure you have everything you need. They will give you the lowdown of the cultural significance of the area, the history, explain how things are today. Consequently you really feel like you are exploring the area and not just on your average cycle tour. More importantly our past guests on the tour have described it as “World Class” and “Much more than just a cycle tour”.

Getting around the North is not like cycling on some of the other cycle trails in New Zealand where you remain on the trail and go from A to B. To take in the true essence of the region – we jump in the van for short stints, board boats with our bikes, and if its running hop on a vintage train. This ensures we get to small towns and scenic spots less traveled by the everyday tourist. It’s an ensemble of quirky art galleries, home baking in cafes, and sleeping in beautifully restored homesteads through to award winning restaurants and luxury accommodation.

In short as I finish writing this, I realise I have only touched the tip of the iceberg, and have covered only a few hundred km’s in distance. Therefore this shows you how much the Far North has to offer, because no day is the same, you can’t get bored and you are highly likely to return again!

Local knowledge shared with you from Steph, part of the Northland Experiences Team.
