Day 1 – 40km cycling.  Starting in Paihia. Depending on the season, we will visit the iconic Waitangi Treaty Grounds on day 1 or day 5.   The award-winning Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a national treasure and tells our nation’s history.

This day is 40km of scenic off-road cycling on the Twin Coast Cycle Trail across to Horeke and the Hokianga Harbour.

Day 2 – 25km cycling.

A fantastic day of cycling, walking and boating.

A bush walk on a private nature reserve that exhibits internationally unique geological rock phenomenon.

Cycle to Māngungu House –  a spectacular site overlooking the harbour.  This is where the largest signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in the country took place, with over 70 chiefs adding their assent before a crowd of up to 3,000 people.

From Māngungu catch the Ranui boat across the Hokianga Harbour.  Cycle a 16km look in Kohokohu that gives you stunning views.   Explore small villages with quirky art galleries, cafes and history by foot or bike.  Enjoy magnificent views of the Hokianga Harbour to the east and the Tasman Sea.

Staying in Omapere for two nights with breath-taking views of thesand dunes across the harbour.

Day 3 – 24km cycling. Cycling to Arai te Uru (South Head) to view the entry to the majestic Hokianga Harbour, and then Waiotemarama Falls.  Visit Manea – Footprints of Kupe Cultural Centre.  This wonderful attraction has made the 2021 Time Magazine – top 100 places to visit in the world!

Not to be missed is the Waipoua Forest for the “Footprints Waipoua Twilight Experience”. Visiting our national icon, the giant kauri tree Tane Mahuta.   The tour is filled with thought provoking stories, humour and spine tingling chants and song.

There is the option this day to not cycle.  Walk, relax, or discuss extra activities with your Tour Leader.

Day 4 – 34km cycling.  Heading back to the East Coast along the Twin Coast Cycle Trail cycling around 34km. Staying in Russell, a charming village set on the waterfront and historically was a Māori settlement until it became a base for European traders, whalers, and missionaries in the early 1800s. Quality accommodation, fine dining and and another glorious sunset.

Day 5 – Travelling from Russell to Kerikeri – you have plenty of time and options to explore the area – on foot or by bike.  Lovely accommodation in peaceful grounds, all the rooms have a spa bath so perfect to relax in after a busy week.

The tour comes to an end with a celebratory meal at a local restaurant in Kerikeri that evening.

Day 6 – For those not in a rush, take in The Old Packhouse Market or the famous Makana Chocolate Factory.  The Packhouse Market is filled with local produce, eateries, arts and crafts, plants, live music….a wonderful place to get amongst the locals.  These are all just a couple of minutes walk down the hotel’s driveway.

There is plenty more to explore in Kerikeri, visit the Stone Store Basin, walk to Rainbow Falls or visit the art and craft galleries, and vineyards.

For those wanting to stay longer and explore the area we can help with your accommodation and designing a fun itinerary to suit your requirements.

5 star reviews

"So much more than a cycling tour...Six of us in our late sixties and early seventies have just completed the Cook to Kupe cycling tour. From the moment we met our colourful guide, Ropata, we knew this tour was going to be something special. It was extremely well organised with first class accommodation and meals. The variety of experiences makes this particular cycling tour a standout. It enables people to appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of the far north and in particular the Hokianga. Nothing was left to chance under our wonderful guide who displayed his passion and knowledge of the area and its people. The whole Northland Experiences team we’re welcoming and passionate and made us feel special. We highly recommended this tour."
